Due to the increased number of variants, the product flow in line assembly is impeded, station utilization decreases, and costs increase. Here, the concept of dynamically interconnected assembly offers a solution. Therefore, the assembly line is dissolved, then the stations are positioned freely and linked by automated guided vehicles. This article explains the challenges of dynamically interconnected assembly and how its potentials can be exploited by implementing an adaptive control software. © 2022 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.
