This study derives a solution for the elastic local buckling strength of the H-shaped member under pure compression theoretically. A trigonometric function with a raised phase is used as the buckling displacement in the web-height direction. Because this function converges faster than the partial sum of the Fourier series, it is possible that the buckling deflection can be described by only three terms of the trigonometric function. Then based on the energy method, the closed-form evaluation formula is proposed. To verify the reliability and the effectiveness of the proposed formula, modal analysis based on the finite element method is conducted. © 2021 Architectural Institute of Japan. All rights reserved.
