Study on stability of cable supported single-layer two-way grid cylindrical shell

Two-way grid single-layer cylindrical reticulated shells are not only beautiful in appearance and regular in arrangement of components, but also light-weighted and efficient in lighting. However, as the span of reticulated shells becomes larger and larger, the problem of overall stability becomes more prominent, which restricts the application of such reticulated shell structures in practical projects. In this paper, a new type of cable stiffened two-way grid single-layer cylindrical shell was proposed, where diagonal cables were arranged inside the two-way grid surface to improve the in-plane stiffness of the structure, and the out-of-plane cables were arranged to improve the out-of-plane stiffness of the structure. Firstly, the effect of cable arrangement was verified by elasto-plastic stability analysis of reticulated shells with different spans and the rationality and practicability of this kind of reticulated shell were demonstrated by considering the effect of various parameters on the structural stability. Secondly, the stability of the cable supported cylindrical reticulated shell structure was investigated by theoretical and experimental studies, and the rationality of cable arrangement was demonstrated. The results show that the stress of reticulated shell structure is more reasonably distributed and its bearing capacity is greatly improved after adopting the staggered arrangement of struts and cables.This kind of structure is not sensitive to defects,but the length of strut has great effect on the bearing capacity of the structure, so the best length of the strut should be ensured in practical engineering. © 2021, Editorial Office of Journal of Building Structures.
