Megatrends such as demographic change or increasing individualization pose big challenges for producing companies. Here advanced robotics and automation provide solutions. They make manufacturing more flexible, economical, and sustainable and allow for short and therefore robust supply chains. Four trends are emerging: the use of AI and digitization, democratization of robotics, automation of automation, and the use of human-robot collaboration and assistive systems. © 2021 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston, Germany.
