Iron (Fe) pollution is an imporant environmental issue in the internal spaces of abandoned coal mines, posing severe threats to human health and ecosystem. The primary sources of Fe contamination were the physicochemical and biological corrosion of anchors, as well as the natural weathering of Fe-bearing sulfide minerals within rock strata. This study referred to the the above two sources as dual Fe pollution. A comprehensive review were provided on the distribution characteristics and environmental impacts of Fe pollution in groundwater from abandoned coal mines worldwide. The pollution causes of dual source-Fe were revealed and the synergistic mechanisms of Fe release were characterized under physicochemical and biological factors. The study results provide the scientific evidence and technical guidance for in-situ remediation and risk assessment of Fe pollution in abandoned coal mines.
