摘要
The paper examines the conceptual relationship between symbolic images of a child and death in the early prose of F. Sologub. Two stories published in the storybook "Sting of Death" (1904) feature contrasting ver sions of a symbolic image of a medium who guides the main characters on their journey to either heaven or hell. "Consolation" centers on the life of Mitya, a poor teenager who witnesses the tragic death of a young girl. Seeing a sudden death makes Mitya ex perience visions of the girl's ghost. The girl's soul is urging him towards death, regarded as the only means for the unhappy boy to escape from the cruel world. Rayechka, also known as Raya in her post-death manifestations, acts as a guardian angel accompanying Mitya during his final descent onto the pavement. Raya would expose him to a heavenly experience, motivating the courageous protagonist to pursue eternal joy. The story "Sting of Death" unfolds as the protagonist, Kolya, is gradually led towards co ntemplating suicide by the malevolent influence of Vanya. Vanya despises all living things, including everything vibrant and blooming. His appearance and philosophy both embody a devilish nature. Consequently, both boys succumb to the fatal influence of death magic and die. In conclusion, examining the primary themes of a child and death, as well as the character of the medium who connects these symbolic elements, helps establish their universal significance in Sologub's literary works. .
