Effectiveness of a Reminder in Improving Adherence With Outpatient Heart Failure Guideline Prescribing

Lack of guideline adherence in medication prescribing is a concern for heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a provider reminder tool with decision support in prescribing for outpatients. A pre -post interventional design was used to measure prescribing and titration of class I medications with implementation of the tool in a convenience sample (N = 120) of consecutive provider-patient encounters. Compliance with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors, beta blockers, and hydralazine-isosorbide dinitrate improved. Compliance to mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists showed significant improvement. Uptitration of beta blockers and renin-angiotensinaldosterone system inhibitors was achieved.
