Analysis of compensatory driving behavior under fog weather conditions

Drivers usually encounter various kinds of adverse weather (Foggy weather) during driving. According to the traditional workload calculation method, dealing with all kinds of adverse weather will increase the driver's workload. However, compensatory driving behavior enables drivers to deal with unexpected situations without increasing their workload. They seem to be able to compensate for driving behavior in response to adverse weather, mainly due to their own driving tasks, adverse weather and workload. By analyzing the correlation of these three factors in time series, it can be found that the compensatory effect of driving behavior can be measured. This study investigated driving behavior in several foggy conditions. To analyze these effects, we conducted a driving simulation study with 31 participants. It is found that the influence of light fog on speed is not significant, and thick fog will lead to a sharp decrease in the speed of the vehicle under test. It is found that compensatory driving behavior can be represented by speed, acceleration and other indicators. With reduced visibility and increased traffic, the pupil area (which reflects the driver's perceptual ability) increased, and the throttle opening (which reflects the driver's ability to control) decreased, and the vehicle slows down. Due to the existence of compensatory driving behavior, the driver can adapt to the fog environment in a relatively short time, reduce the speed and increase the headway, and the pupil area of the driver gradually returns to normal. If poor visibility and high traffic volumes exceed the driver's ability to compensate for driving behavior, the perceived workload of the driver will gradually increase, and the driving safety and comfort will decrease. Therefore, we can set reasonable speed limit value can make the driver improve the safety and comfort of driving behavior through compensatory driving behavior in fog.
