Legal capacity of people over 18 years with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities in Colombia

This article aims to analyze the exercise of the legal capacity of people over 18 years with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities in Colombia, based on Law 1996 of 2019, in order to propose some recommendations to consider when making reasonable adjustments and define the supports for decision -making, that address both the social model of disability and the human rights approach, as well as the private autonomy. Through an analysis of documentary content and normative comparison, this paper presents some aspects that should be considered in the personal, interrelation and structural spheres, to maximize the exercise of the legal capacity of people with disabilities, and to make effective the principles of autonomy, human dignity and diversity.
