Functional Free Muscle Transfer for Reconstruction of Traumatic Adult Brachial Plexus Injuries

There is a possibility that advances in nerve transfers and especially distal nerve transfers may reduce the indications of FFMT for elbow flexion and hand reanimation. However, in failed cases of nerve transfers or late presentation of adult BPI, FFMT for upper limb reconstruction is a reliable choice. FFMT for adult BPI is time consuming for the patient and medical team; therefore, precise indications for this surgery must occur with good patient motivation. Better results with FFMT for adult BPI are expected with research advances for ideal donor nerves, robotic -assisted microsurgery, 37 and mechanical engineering assisting in determining the ideal surgical technique to achieve the best functional result.
