Study on Miniaturized, Circularly Polarized Microstrip Patch Antenna Using DGS at S-band

摘要
The design and fabrication of a miniaturized, circularly polarized Microstrip Patch Antenna (MPA) for wireless and small satellite applications at S-band is reported in this paper. The Defected Ground Structure (DGS) technique is applied in a normal circular polarization MPA to create a degree of miniaturization. The results showed that the miniaturized antenna has an operation frequency of around 2.47 GHz while having the same size as the original antenna working at 3.1 GHz, it means that it is a miniaturization efficiency of 21% has been reached. The measured gain is about 1 dBi at 2.47 GHz. Additionally, the AR is below 3 dB at this operation frequency, it indicates that the quality of circular polarization has been maintained. This antenna design is promising when applied in compact wireless devices, as well as small satellites applications.
