To the Editor: The phrase "age-related hearing loss" that is used in the review article by Lin (April 25 issue)(1) misleadingly implies that it is part of normal physiological aging, which it is not. Without excessive noise exposure, auditory sensitivity is preserved well into old age.(2) Other terms that may be more appropriate are "sociocusis"(3) and "noise-induced hearing loss in older persons." The only evidence-based noise-exposure level to prevent hearing loss is the time-weighted average of 70 dB over a 24-hour period as calculated by the Environmental Protection Agency.(4) The actual safe noise-exposure level to prevent auditory damage may be . . .
