HPR1000 is with the passive residual heat removal system of secondary side (PRS) in order to keep reactor safety specifically from loss of heat sink in the secondary side, which belongs to the design extension condition (DEC). This study proposes an improvement in simplifying the PRS by eliminating the emergency make-up tank considering the optimization of reactor economy. An analysis was conducted on the effectiveness of this improvement and the result shows that it brings no sacrifice in the reactor safety but results in a more simplified and economical reactor. © 2020, Editorial Board of Journal of Nuclear Power Engineering.
