Development of a modified design resistance function for welded connections of high strength steel. In various research projects, a design resistance function modified for high strength steel could be developed for fillet welds with same base metal by Rasche [1]. In the frame of another research project [2] the applicability of this modified design resistance function could be confirmed for mixed connections with fillet welds with base metal of normal and high strength steels. The results of these research on a design model for the determination of the load carrying capacity of welded connections made of high strength steel has been presented as an amendment to the European code committee SC3 and is meanwhile accepted for incorporation in the future version of prEN 1993-1-8 [3]. For butt welds of high strength steel it could be observed that the failure may occur in the weld or in the heat affected zone though the verification is usually done at the member section. Therefore, an adapted design model for butt welds with high strength steel is also planned to be developed. © 2019, Ernst und Sohn. All rights reserved.
