Study on Corrosion Fatigue Performance of Welded Joints of Weathering Steel and High Performance Steel

Coating-free steel bridges usually use weathering steel (WS) or high performance steel (HPS). The fatigue performance of coating-free welded steel bridge is not only influenced by welding quality but also by corrosion environment. In the fatigue design of such welded steel bridges, the corrosion fatigue strength of welded detail needs to be taken into consideration. In this paper, the comparative fatigue tests were carried out on corroded and non-corroded polished butt joint specimens, including 22 WS specimens and 19 HPS specimens, focusing on the fatigue strength of welded joints after corrosion. Meanwhile, the corrosion test was carried out by neutral salty spray dry/wet cyclic acceleration method. Besides, 5% NaCl solution with pH=6.5 was applied as the corrosion solution, with 60 corrosion cycles in total. On the basis of the fatigue tests, the result was utilized to match fatigue S-N curve considering no survival probability and lower bounds of 95% survival probability. Meanwhile, the effect of corrosion and welding on welded joints was investigated according to the analysis. Moreover, a comparison to the previous fatigue test on base metal of these two kinds of steel indicates that the welded joints and corrosion both can reduce the fatigue strength of these two kinds of steel, with corroded welded joint further reducing the fatigue strength. The reduction percentages in the fatigue strength of welded joints of WS and HPS are 53.0% and 49.0%, respectively. It is remarkable that the same values of corroded welded joints are 60.6% and 50.4%. Thus, in the design of highway coating-free welded bridge, the fatigue strength of polished butt joints of weathering steel can be recommended as FAT80. In the design of railway coating-free welded bridge, the allowance fatigue stress range is recommended as category Ⅸ. © 2022, Department of Journal of the China Railway Society. All right reserved.
