A Novel Approach to Produce Single-Phase High-Entropy Alloys

Thermodynamic simulations and experimental characterization of the equiatomic Al20Nb20Ti20V20Zr20 (at%) alloy have shown the presence of a bcc/B2 type dendritic phase along with intermetallics of Zr and Al in the inter-dendrtitic region. A new route was adopted to produce the as-cast structure with single phase by altering stoichiometry of the alloy to match with that of the dendritic phase. Theoritical predictions and microstructural characterization of the produced non-equiatomic composition of dendrtic phase alloy Nb35V25Ti25Al10Zr5 (at.%) showed significant reduction in the volume fraction of intermetallic phase in comparison to the equiatomic alloy. Therefore, the present study has opened up a possibility of designing several single-phase HEA compositions from the already existing multiphase–multicomponent alloys.
