Educational intervention for the prevention of diabetic foot

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized mainly by hyperglycemia, it generates acute and chronic complications; Among the most feared is the diabetic foot, which is considered the first cause of non -traumatic amputation of the lower limbs. Objective: To evaluate the results of an educational intervention aimed at improving the level of knowledge about the prevention of diabetic foot. Method: Applied research was carried out, with a descriptive quasi -experimental design. The universe consisted of 56 patients, of which 50 were part of the research sample. The McNemar test was used to identify changes in the level of knowledge about diabetic foot prevention. Results: predominance of patients between 40 and 50 years old (48%), followed by those who were between 61 and 70 years old at the time of the study (38%). There are 64% of female patients, 46% of patients self -identify as mestizo and 52% reported a medium educational level. Prevalence of patients with low level during the pretest (74.00%). After the intervention, it was identified that patients with a medium level predominated (52.00%), followed by patients with a high level (38.00%). The results of the McNemar test show Z value of 2.95 and statistical significance with p of 0.027. Conclusions. The applied educational intervention generated positive changes around the improvement of the level of knowledge about diabetic foot prevention in the patients who participated in the research.
