The application of the classic Value Stream Mapping is largely mature. However, the current use of digital technology hardly reaches areas beyond visualization software. Research activities in this area are not very synchronized or targeted. The reason for this is the unclear distinction between the value stream method as a contribution to digitization and the digitization of the method itself. This article uses these two perspectives to describe a framework for possible future directions of development in research on the digitized value stream method. © 2021 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.
