Adaptation: Satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs scale to prevent teenage pregnancy

Introduction: Adolescent pregnancy is a public health challenge. Basic psychological needs have an effect on behavior, so they could have an impact on the prevention of early pregnancy. Studies on sexual risk behaviors and sexuality do not show an adapted and/or validated measure of basic psychological needs. Objective: to adapt and validate the scale of satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs in order to benefit from an indicator to assess the basic psychological needs of adolescents to prevent pregnancy. Methods: the sample consisted of 767 Mexicans aged 18 to 19 years with sexual debut. The scale was adapted for pregnancy prevention in the Mexican context and validated by confirmatory factor analysis. Results: the validity of the adaptation of the scale was confirmed by reducing one item in the satisfaction factor and in frustration of autonomy, obtaining satisfactory goodness -of -fit indices in the subscales of satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs separately. Conclusion: the adapted scale can be used as a valid and reliable instrument in adolescents at the beginning of their sexual life, allowing an increased understanding of sexual behavior to prevent pregnancy.
