TRANSIENT SIMULATION OF GLAZE ICE ACCRETION ON AN AIRCRAFT WING: A QUASI-STEADY APPROACH

A full time-dependent solution of the governing equations for glaze and mixed ice accretion problems will be costly in terms of computational time. Using a quasi-steady state approach to solve the problem will help achieve virtually the same accuracy without having to endure the computational time penalty. A valid quasi-steady simulation needs to employ a time step size that is small enough to be able to reproduce the full time-dependent solution to within a very small error band. We have found that both the 1s and the 0.1s time steps produce virtually identical results. Analysis reveals a 12% or 8.5% increase in the maximum droplet collection efficiency depending on whether the value of the liquid water content has increased from 0.5 g/m(3) to 1 g/m(3), or the value of the free stream velocity has increased from 75 m/s to 150 m/s, respectively.
