Central to post-Wagnerian aesthetics, the "synthesis of the arts" led composers to renew opera libretto writing by drawing on literary, philosophical and historical references. A true work in itself, Guercoeur's libretto testifies to the cultural eclecticism of its author and the pessimistic dimension of his worldview.
