Evaluation of Microstructure Characteristics of SBS Modified Asphalt with Polyphosphate Complex

Four asphalts of pure asphalt, polyphosphate (PPA), styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and PPA & SBS were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (IR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and DSR. The results show that PPA is added to the Pure asphalt to form new ester compounds, both PPA and PPA compound SBS modified asphalt have new mixed absorption peaks in the 800-1 000 cm-1 band, explain that a new chemical reaction has occurred between PPA and pure asphalt and SBS modified asphalt. By observing the AFM three-dimensional topography, it can be found that the surface of PPA, SBS and PPA compounded SBS modified asphalt is rougher and more rugged than the pure asphalt, and the surface of PPA compounded SBS modified asphalt is the roughest. At the same time, the peak area of PPA modified asphalt and PPA compounded SBS modified asphalt is higher than pure asphalt and SBS modified asphalt, the number of three modified asphalt peaks area is higher than that of the pure asphalt, the observation results of AFM three-dimensional topography were verified by three indexes: root mean square roughness Rq, peak honeyness index Sds and surface bearing index Sbi. The verification results also show that the PPA compounded SBS modified asphalt has the maximum hardness, DSR results also show that it has good high temperature deformation resistance. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was used to compare the three indicators for evaluating the surface roughness of asphalt. It was found that the surface bearing index Sbi has a maximum weight of 0.571 4, it is suggested that when using AFM to characterize the roughness of asphalt surface, Sbi is more real and accurate. © 2019, Materials Review Magazine.
