Dystonia is a common neurological symptom; it may be the isolated manifestation of certain idiopathic conditions (often hereditary) or a feature of many metabolic, degenerative or environmental diseases. Important progress in the field of genetics of the idiopathic dystonias has been made recently. Electrophysiological studies have advanced our understanding of the pathophysiology of dystonia. Major breakthroughs have also come in the area of dystonia treatment, particularly with the use of botulinum toxin injections.
