Immunoglobulin G (IgG) was purified by affinity chromatography from the CSF of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and controls. In MS patients, the IgG fraction contains anti-myelin basic protein (anti-MBP), anti-MBP neutralizing antibody and an antibody which inhibits neutralization of anti-MBP. Anti-MBP was detected in patients with acute relapses, anti-MBP neutralizing antibody was present in patients in clinical remission and the inhibiting antibody was detected in patients with chronically progressing MS. A myelin basic protein antibody cascade could be involved in the mechanism of MS. © 1990.
