The moral naturalism of Steinbeck and Santayana

The responsiveness of Steinbeck at the loss of consciousness of modernity turns The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden or The winter of our discontent not only in literary models of "cosmic naturalism", but a real communication between the natural world and human existence, like the philosophical works of Santayana responds to the need retrospective, returning to nature, to restore the conscience of America outside the experience of the failed "moralism" or "supernaturalism". The result of this reunion is the "symbolic materialism" that unites them, both formally as the content, in writing a literature next to the philosophy and a philosophy that drinks in literature o poetry, respectively in the works of Steinbeck and Santayana.
