MEETING THE "LOST DECADES". STUDY ON THE DEBATE OF ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE OF LATIN AMERICA, 1820-1870

The debate about the economic performance of the American republics formed after the wars for independence is installed in the historiography. The initial vision defined as "lost decades" the period from 1820-1870, has been under discussion in recent years and his vision for the economic failure of the new republics was nuanced. This research note proposes to carry out a review of the historiography on this topic. The first part refers to the contributions of historians in relation to Latin America and then focus on the specific case of Mexico's economic performance in post-independence decades. The note aims to highlight the need for further progress in the case studies-, to account for the specific realities of each region, to thereby overcome the view that presents Latin America as a homogeneous whole in that period so to enrich the debate.
