A COMPARISON OF VASCULAR BIOLOGICAL ACTIONS OF CARBON-MONOXIDE AND NITRIC-OXIDE

Carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO) were tested in vitro in rat superior mesenteric artery (SMA) rings for vasodilator activity as well as the adherence of cat polymorphonuclear (PMN) leukocytes to isolated cat SMA endothelium. Both CO and NO effectively relaxed rat SMA rings, NO being about 4 times as potent as CO in this regard. Methylene blue, a guanylyl cyclase inhibitor blocked all of the NO relaxation and 75% of the CO-induced relaxation. Also, both CO and NO markedly attenuated adherence of cat PMNs to cat SMA endothelium. NO was about 3 times as potent as CO in this regard. These properties are consistent with potential cytoprotective effects of low concentrations of NO and CO in inflammatory states.
