摘要
Jean-Francois Gaultier, a successor of Michel Sarrazin, was a physician from Lower Normandy, arrived in Quebec City in 1742 with the status of king's physician. His correspondence with the Paris Royal Academy of sciences provided a detailed account of his climatologic, botanic, agricultural and medical observations. Gaultier belongs to the 18th century movement of aerist or meteorological medicine founded by Hippocrates and developed by Thomas Sydenham in the second half of the 17th century. The aim of this medical conception was to establish connections between meteorology and illness. In considering present historiography, Gaultier was the first French physician to represent officially this movement in the French settlement of America.
