A description is given of the operating principle of a water/zeolite periodic heat pump with an internal heat-transfer circuit and zone-wise sorption. The zone-wise sorption makes it possible to achieve a considerable increase in the internally transferable quantity of heat. A mathematical model was developed in order to simulate dynamically the mode of operation of this heat pump. Obtained as the result of the simulation is a map showing the useful output and the heat ratio as a function of the NTU value with the relative loading width as parameter. The results show further that, with the periodic heat pump described, it is possible to achieve clearly higher heat ratios than with a continuously operating ammonia/water absorption heat pump.
