Virtual reality (VR) is one of the current 'trendy' areas of technology. Hardly a month goes by without an article in a broadsheet newspaper or periodical about current developments in the area. Much of the media (and presumably public) interest builds on the fascination with the modern games cultures (with occasional spice added by allusions to more 'adult' games). The articles, having mentioned all this, then predominantly move on to show that there are potentially 'useful' applications, and tucked in somewhere are occasionally some quotes about the work we are doing at York. The aim of this paper is to give a broad overview of what we have done with this technology and the areas we hope to explore in the near future.
