This article is an attempt to clarify the significance of the metaphor of the mask, recurrently used in literary theory and criticism to describe writers' strategies of self-representation. Diverse and even contradictory uses of this term will be distinguished, and related writing procedures such as apocriphal writers, heteronyms, pseudonyms, self-fiction and fictionalized biographies, will be thoroughly analised.
