REFLECTIONS OF A NEW LIBRARIAN

When I began library school in the fall of 1991, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my degree once I received it. I wished to give children what I was so fortunate to receive as a child - encouragement in reading for pleasure, an appreciation of libraries and librarians, and confidence in seeking information. I also wanted to serve as a role model for children, particularly children of color. This article is a diary of my experiences from the completion of library school to the end of my first year as a children's librarian with the New York Public Library.
