摘要：

This study discusses midwives in the city of Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, the third metropolis of Brazil. It shows how a planned city can be an icon of modernity. Our investigation brings out the archaic presence of midwives in terms of their religiosity: a cultural survival of the ancient village of Curral d'El Rey, the starting point of the new metropolis. We use the method of oral history to better understand the work of a midwife in comparison with the so-called modern world.
