Score a goal for gender equality

From 1 lth June to 1 lth July 2010, South Africa hosted the FlFA World Cup. For years, the country prepared to host the mega event in a process that Included building new stadiums, improving infrastructure, enhancing transport systems and beautifying cities. Moreover, the whole region readied itself with the expectation that tourists to the southern part of Africa would take the opportunity to stay a while and enjoy the region's many tourist treasures. However, in much of the public and media discourse around the 2010 FlFA soccer tournament linking social development and economic empowerment to the event, a crucial part of the equation was missing, viz a. gender perspective. This Reportback reports on the campaign by Gender Links during the FlFA soccer tournament. The Campaign used sport to raise awareness on women's rights during the period before and after the FIFA World Cup.
