摘要
The purpose is to understand and explain the patterns of regional development in Indonesia since the early 1970s: What have been the principal features of regional economic and social performance? Has regional inequality altered significantly? Are levels of any trends in the economic and social indicators closely related at the provincial level? And, most important, how are these patterns to be explained? Within the framework sketched above, the study draws on two very rich sources of information. The first is the country's now comprehensive set of regional economic and social statistics. These are available from approximately the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, enabling detailed provincial profiles and trends and economic-social interactions to be investigated during a period of extremely rapid change. Second, a large study of all major regions in Indonesia has been undertaken, including detailed examinations of all but one of the country's 27 provinces. The next section provides a brief summary of the data base and concepts. In Section III the regional record is examined in some detail, investigating both economic and social developments and explaining their often complex relationship. Next follows an explanation of these results. Finally, there is an assessment of the study's implications and discussion of possible future directions for research. -from Author
