1. Cowans's estimate for the shock-wave pressure for which supercritical shear occurs is very much an underestimate, since the theoretical strength is dependent on the loading conditions. 2. Twinning is of low activity in copper on loading at 100 GPa because of the more rapid dislocation glide mechanism, which arises at many shear nucleation centers. 3. Specific structures have been examined in detail: disorientation bands, which are formed on unloading and are a form of adiabatic shear band. © 1990 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
