INTERFEROMETRIC MEASUREMENTS OF THE SOLAR LINE FE-I LAMBDA-5576.1 A AND ITS CENTER-TO-LIMB VARIATION

We report on interferometric absolute wavelength measurements of the solar line Fe I lambda 5576.1 angstrom at the solar disc centre and along the solar meridian. The measurements have been performed in 1985 using a LASER-controlled Fabry-Perot interferometer with multilayer coatings, placed in front of the Littrow spectrograph of the Schauinsland Observatory near Freiburg. The resulting channeled spectra were recorded on film and digitized. The data reduction includes a correction for the phase dispersion of the Fabry Perot multilayer coatings. The main results are: (a) A value for the absolute wavelength of 5576.090 +/- 0.001 angstrom at the solar disc centre; (b) a limb shift curve with a monotonic increase of the wavelength towards the solar limb-i.e.there is no sag for cos theta almost-equal-to 0.8, as reported by some authors; and (c) a possible super-gravity red shift at the limb.
