Hospital infections in the physical medicine and rehabilitation service: six year data

Objective: To determine the hospital infections during six years in physical medicine and rehabilitation clinic. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was performed via the records of Infection Control Committee and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinic of the University. Results: Twelve patients with hospital infections were determined. The diagnosis of the patients were spinal cord injury (7/12, 58.3%) hemiplegia (4/12, 33.3%), and transvers myelitis (1/12, 8.3%). The most common hospital infections were urinary system infections, soft tissue infections, pneumonia, and bacteremia, with a prevalence of 6 (% 50), 3 (25%), 2 (16.7%), and 1 (8.3%), respectively. Conclusion: It was found that the prevalence of hospital infections determined in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinic can be omitted in the respect of surveillance. In conclusion, it seems acceptable that local or unitary surveillance studies can be excluded in physical medicine and rehabilitation clinics without extensive rehabilitation services and adequate staff.
