The search for new crop protection chemicals is continuing but the rate of success has been falling, making the process more expensive. Scientists are also concerned that pest and disease populations may develop resistance to chemicals, or that the application of some chemicals may cause environmental damage. Biological agents provide promising alternatives, but we need to understand more about their modes of action.
