MAKING SENSE OF SURFACE-STRUCTURE

First-principles calculations and corresponding experimental results underline the importance of basic chemical concepts in understanding the systematics of bonding and diffusion of atoms on metal surfaces. Examples discussed include surface step structure, adsorption and diffusion near surface steps and substitutional surface diffusion processes.
