The history of literature and the understanding of the english society at the Lower Middle Age. Geoffrey Chaucer is seen as one of the most important writers of all time. His monumental work, The Canterbury Tales, tells the story of a group of pilgrims going from London to Canterbury to visit the tomb of St. Thomas Becket. On the way, each pilgrim tells a story, and in the set of this scenery many different literary styles of the Middle Ages show up, the pilgrims depict a scenery of English society of the period in question, namely, the years that include the XIV and XV centuries. This article intends to give an overview of English literature until the appearance of Geoffrey Chaucer as an exponent of it, depicting the main features of his greatest work and the link with the historical and social space in which the poet lived.
