NONSTEROIDAL ANTIINFLAMMATORY AGENTS AS TREATMENT FOR ACUTE BOVINE COLIFORM MASTITIS

Bovine coliform mastitis is characterized by severe inflammation. Symptoms and pathophysiology of the disease are described. Special reference is made to the biochemical process causing inflammation. The release of endotoxin activates a number of mediators of inflammation which provoke both local and systemic inflammatory reactions. The administration of non-steroidal antiinflammatory agents can modulate the biochemical processes and thus curb the symptoms of inflammation. Numerous investigations give evidence that particularly flunixin meglumine shows an inhibitory effect on those reactions causing acute inflammation.
