SMES DESIGN AND USE .1.

Large and small-scale SMES-design studies are reported here in Part 1 (5000 MWh) and Part 2 (10 MWh) papers by the authors. Designs and efficiency are discussed. Costs for 10 MWh in Japan are about 6x Break-Even value; costs for 5000 MWh in the U. S. and Japan1] are probably at Break-Even value. A new axial rippled, flat pancake SMES coil2], recently introduced at ASC in Chicago, is reviewed and suggested for both large and small SMES.3]
