STABILIZATION-POLICIES WITHIN A MONETARY UNION OR WITH FLEXIBLE EXCHANGE-RATES

The critics of the monetary unification of Europe point out that stabilisation will be made impossible in case of national specific disturbances because of the loss of monetary autonomy. We analyse the relevance of that argument, which depends on the nature of disturbances, on the objectives pursued by the authorities, and on the degree of price and wage rigidity.
