The main features of isotopic transient kinetics -principle, implementation, performances and limits- are reviewed through various examples of heterogeneous catalysis (hydrogenation, oxidation). Powerful "in situ" method for surface investigation, this technique is shown to provide unique information on mechanistic pathways.
