Consideration of power supplies presently used in welding shows that other characteristics are needed for improvements in automated welding. The paper describes a supply based on a resonant high-frequency oscillating circuit, which exhibits these characteristics. A description of the design, development and construction of the supply is given. The supply is built up of small lightweight units each giving more than 17 A (200 W). The results of measurements on the supply are given. Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding trials with the current up to 70 A have been carried out, and it is shown that extension to currents of more than 100 A is possible, by the addition of more units.
