A uniqueness theorem is established for the elastodynamic problem of direct scattering of harmonic small-amplitude waves by an obstacle embedded in an isotropic medium with spatially varying parameters. Uniqueness theorems are then developed for the inverse problem of boundary determination of the obstacle associated with this direct scattering problem. In particular, it is shown for nondegenerate elastodynamic problems that knowledge of both the lamellar and the solenoidal far-field patterns is necessary to reconstruct the obstacle's boundary. © 1990 Oxford University Press.
