COMPACT-GROUPS ON COMPACT PROJECTIVE-PLANES

Let P = (P, L) be a compact projective plane with 0 < dim P < infinity and let Phi be a compact connected subgroup of Aut(P). If dim Phi greater than or equal to dim E - dim P, where E is the elliptic motion group of the corresponding classical plane, then Phi congruent to E or Phi, is isomorphic to a point stabilizer E(0) in E, cf. [31]. Here we consider the case Phi congruent to E(0). It is shown that the action of Phi on the point space P is equivalent to the classical action of E(0). For dim P is an element of {8, 16} the plane P is uniquely determined by a 2-dimensional subplane epsilon with SO(2)R less than or equal to Aut(epsilon).
