The unification of Germany paved the way for Poland's westward integration. Against the background of this realisation, which shaped the transformation of Polish politics after the end of Communist rule, the chairman of the German-Polish Society, Friedbert Pflueger, member of the German Bundestag and disarmament policy spokesman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary party, describes the current state oft he integration process in Poland, the problems Poland as well as the European Union (EU) and Germany can expect during coming years, and the steps which should be considered for their settlement. He views the ability to overcome nationalisms, which includes in particular that dividing Germans and Poles, as the force necessary for the resolution of individual European problems.
