USING ARIEL, RLGS DOCUMENT TRANSMISSION-SYSTEM TO IMPROVE DOCUMENT DELIVERY IN THE UNITED-STATES

Ariel, an innovative document transmission system, was developed by the Research Libraries Group to meet increasing demands for rapid document delivery of journal articles. The Ariel software integrates standard microcomputers, laser printers, scanners, and communications equipment to send, receive, and print images of documents. Ariel transmits over the Internet, a communications network used by many universities and research institutions in the United States. Ariel can be configured to be a send-and-receive, a send-only, or a receive-only station. Ariel offers significant advantages over fax transmissions. Ariel is being installed in libraries in the United States, and also in the UK, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Hong Kong and Finland.
